Spring is almost upon us and we can feel it here at The Hut. The sun is warmer, the days are getting longer, birds are chirping a little louder. Ahhhhh… This also means that the Spring Equinox is approaching!
Derived from Latin and meaning “equal night,” the equinox occurs twice a year when the sun passes over the equator, giving us nearly equal day and night. This means that there will be approximately 12 daylight hours and 12 hours of darkness. Also called Ostara or vernal equinox, it’s long been thought of as a time to celebrate the balance of light and dark, and that renewal, rebirth, and new beginnings are upon us.
This year, Ostara falls on March 20th. We encourage you to plan something special to celebrate this meaningful seasonal shift.
Spring is associated with dawn and new beginnings. Plan to wake up and watch the sunrise. We suggest brewing a cup of your favorite herbal tea (we have a large selection at QH if you need to up your stash), light a candle, cozy up in your favorite spot, and toast the rising sun as it ushers in this new season.
Grab a special someone—or go solo if that serves you better—and head outside to look for the signs of Spring. Go for a walk in the park, take a hike, pack a picnic, or throw down a Mexican blanket for a meditation session or to do some cloud watching. Breathe in the Spring air and set an intention to enjoy this glorious day.
At The Hut, we like having a little friendly competition playing one of our favorite outdoor sports. Our favorites are skateboarding and disc golf. We’ll even set up a dartboard outside. Nobody said that had to be an indoor sport! But we don’t be offended if you’d rather shoot hoops, take a bike ride, or play tennis.
March 20 is also World Storytelling Day, so take this opportunity to share stories of your family, childhood, or any other yarn you'd like to spin. Even if you’re not ready to share your story, don’t let the moment pass you by. It’s very inspiring or even cathartic to write down your thoughts and stories in a special journal. Then you have a record that you can go back through when you’re ready to spin a yarn.
Certainly last but definitely not least, don’t forget Mom. Many Middle Eastern countries like Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Syria celebrate Mother's Day on or around the same day as the Equinox. But even though we live in Ohio, we're sure your mom would appreciate a fresh-smelling candle for the spring, a piece of new jewelry, or her own set of healing crystals. Of course, don’t forget to also give her a call!
These are just a few ways you can usher in the new season and celebrate the glory of Spring. The staff at Quonset Hut is always happy to help you purchase the perfect products for your Ostara celebration. Stop by today and don't forget to "Tell a friend!"
